One Family's Path to Stability
When a single mother lost her job, the family's housing soon followed.
For 16 months, they lived without a home, borrowing a friend’s couch on the weekends and sleeping in their car during the week so her daughter could stay in school.
While her daughter focused on classes, cheer practice, and making it through her junior year, her mother carried the weight of unemployment, homelessness, and the fear that asking for help could mean losing her daughter.
When she came to United Way of Denton County, she didn’t just need housing. She needed someone to walk alongside her.
Together, we bridged the immediate gap with grocery and gas assistance while navigating employment opportunities, job training, housing barriers, and an affordable apartment close to her daughter’s school. Within weeks, she secured a job, and soon after, a safe place for them both to call home.
